Abstract

19,086. Daw, A. W., and Daw, Z. W. Sept. 21. Valves and valve-gear; valvechests. - In a percussive rock drill or direct-acting pump or engine, in which a slide or piston valve is operated by fluid, the valve is made in three parts; namely, a central part 1 which carries the valve proper 2, and piston part 1; 1 which slide in cylinders 4, 5 so as to have movement independent of the valve 2 and are connected at their outer ends with the main cylinder by passages 7, 8. The inner reduced ends of these nistons 1,- 1 are open to pressure in the valve-chest 12, so as to move them back when the valve is shot over, and the spaces in front of the enlarged euds are permanently open to the exhaust through passages 13, 13. A small bore 22 may be provided for any fluid leaking between the main piston and cylinder. Instead of being formed solid, the valve pistons may be cored out to receive extensions on the central part, the ends being connected to the exhaust through ports 19, and the reduced necks through ports 20, 20. The enlargements 17, 17 slide in enlarged portions of the bores, which have passages 21 to admit pressure from the valve-chest to assist in returning the valve pistons.
