Abstract

18,703. Duke, J. W., and Garbutt, E. Sept. 16. Lift valves; actuating valves ; casings.-Relates to the construction and operation of valves for steam whistles, sirens, &c., in which waste of steam is minimized and any condensed steam remaining in the valve after use is collected in a chamber in the valve casing and run off as water. The steaminlet passage B terminates in a chamber D, from which the steam passes through the valve opening E to the outlet passage C leading to the whistle &c. The chamber H, having a run-off pipe L, is connected by the valve opening I with the passage C when the whistle is not being sounded. The stems of the valves G, K work in holes in box-nuts A<1>, A<3> respectively, the two valves working together so that when one valve is open the other is closed. When the cord Q is pulled, the lever P' lifts the two valves and allows steam to pass from the chamber D to the passage C. On the cord being released, the spring N returns the valves, thus connecting the passage C with the chamber H, into which any condensed steam can drain and pass away. In the method of actuation shown in Fig. 3, the stem K<1> of the valves is raised by the end of the threaded bolt R, which is screwed into a bridgepiece A<3> and is rotated by a handle U<1> on a pedestal U.
