Planing.-A machine for tapering or shaping lengths of cane;. wood, and the like, more particularly for tapering the triangular - sectioned lengths of cane for built-cane fishing-rods, driving- whips, golf-club shafts, and like articles, comprises a body a, supporting bearings for a V-grooved cutter or milling-tool e, driven by belt or other means. To the table f is fixed by pins and curved slots, to allow horizontal angular adjustment, a base-plate g, along the centre of which is a guiderib h, upon which rests the curved side o<1> of the cane, the upper edges of which pass under two spring-pressed V-grooved blocks i<1>, i'. The cane is fixed in a clamp m<1>, which is fixed to an eyeleted band j<12>, passing round two pulleys j<9>, j<11> provided with studs. The pulley j<9> is fixed to a shaft j<6>, having a spur-wheel j<5> gearing through an intermediate pinion j<4> with a wheel j<3> on a shaft j, which is screwed into a barrel k and is connected by a swivel joint to the table. Thus, as the cane is fed along by the hand-driven band, the table with the work is moved vertically towards the cutter and a taper cut is produced. To vary the tapering action, a set of change-pulleys or gearwheels may be used in connexion with the shaft j<6>, the supports of which may be movable. The band may be replaced by a chain, and the spur gear by bevel or worm gear, and the cutter may be given the sliding vertical action, the work holders and guides being fixed.
