Variable-speed gearing ; cranks.-Relates to variable-speed epicyclic gearing in which the variation is brought about by altering the throw of cranks that operate ratchet pawls. Sun-pinions C, D secured to the driving-shaft A are in mesh with long planet pinions EF in mesh, through idler pinions GH with an anchored pinion I and with a pinion J on the driven shaft B, respectively. The pinion F is carried by a disk K<1> running loose on the shaft A and provided with ratchet teeth L on its face. These teeth are engaged by pawls M carried by segments N connected by links N' to pins p, which may be moved towards or from the axes of the pinions E to vary the speed. The pins p are fixed to plates p<1> pivoted at 0 to sleeves P passing through and rotating with the pinions E. By sliding a sleeve Q, which operates scrolls q, spindles f<2> may be rotated, and these spindles carry disks f<1> which have pins f projecting into slots in the plates p<1>, serving to rotate them. When the pins p come into line with the axes of the pinions E, no motion is transmitted, but the planet elements roll round on the pinions I, J, respectively. In a modification, the idler pinions are dispensed with by arranging the pinions C, D as internally-toothed wheels. In this case, the spindles corresponding to the spindles f<2> are rotated by toothed gearing operated by a lever.
