Folding paper. - Relates to apparatus for cutting a strip or strips o f p a p e r into sheets, folding the sheets, and interfolding the ends of adjacent sheets. Two hollow rolls 1 are mounted on hollow fixed shafts 2, which are connected with an air-pump whereby air is continuously exhausted. The rolls have perforated casings, below which are chambers 6 communicating by passages 4 with openings in the hollow shafts. The upper half of each shaft is also provided with a passage 7. Each strip of paper passes round a feed-roll 13 and a roll 10 having a rib 11 which co-operates with a recess 11<a> in the roll 1 to crease the paper. The sheet is cut off by a knife 9 on the roll 1 which co-operates with a fixed knife 8. A recess 12 in the roll 10 allows the knife 9 to pass. The knives and folding-ribs are so placed on the two sets of rollers that the cut in one strip comes opposite the crease in the other. The sheets are released from the rolls 1 as the passages 4 are closed by the lower parts of the shafts 2. The sheets pass between two pins 23 on a horizontally-reciprocating bar 22, which is connected by a rack and pinion 18 with a vertical rack-bar 15, reciprocated by an eccentricallygrooved disk on the roll 1. The sheets are thus folded at the crease and are then pressed down on the pile. by rotating blades 20 carried by the pinions 18. The strips may be divided longitudinally by rotary cutters on the feed-rolls or elsewhere.
