To ZZ I07m/1L "it may concern.
Be it known that l, HENRY F. BECHMAN, of lattle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State ot' Michigan, Ihave invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Asso ciating, Cintinfr, and Folding Apparatus; and l hereby' declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part oi' this specification.
This invention is an improvement in folding mechanism for web printing machines, and its object is to ena le newspapers of large size, or many pages, to be delivered and folded together Without collecting. Y
The invention in brief comprises mechanism Wherehy the products of several web presses, or printing niechanisins, can be assembled, cut., and associated at one folder, and delivered folded together as one paper--but the products will he separately severed; which enables a larger nuznher of pages printed on different 'Webs to he assembled and delivered together in one section than it has heen heretofore practi cal to do.
ln my invention instead of attempting to assemble the webs oi the ditle'rent presses together and cut them all together, the Webs from the several presses are separately severed, after they have been brought together at the associating point; and in this way I can assemble and sever a large number of pages Without collect-ing, and simulta neously7 fold the associated pages in one folder. Thus l am able tocutand fold a larger product, or great number or" pages, as one paper, for which there is' now a great demand-Without putting undue strain on the folding or cutting cylinders, nr the cutting knives.
I "will now describe the invention with reference 'to the accompanying drawings,-
Which diagrammatically illustrate the means whereby the Webs tromv two presses may be associated and folded together; hut the invention is not limited to any particular make or number of presses, nor to any particular size or number of pages printed by each press. The parts of such presses and folders, as are Well known, are conven tionally illustrated inv the drawings; hut the following description and the drawings will enable any one familiar with the art lo conlstruct and use the invention.
two web printing presses, and the'novel means for associating, cutting, and folding the1r products. F ig. 2 is an enlarged ele"- vation of the web cutting and folding. mecheinem. l
In the drawings A and B`dcsignate the `ormers of folders located near Ithe delivery ends of two Web printing mechanisms of any suitable type, such for example as ishown in my Patent #814,510 of March G, 1906; and Reissue #13129 of July `l2, 1910.` 'A folding mechanism may be provided beneath each former, if desired, so 'that the Webs from either press may be run to either lfolder. As such folding mechanismscould he duplicates l haveV shown one such folder at the apex of former A and means for di-y recting the webV (or Webs) from formerl B .to the folder beneath the former A. y The same means Wouldsei've to directwebs from former A to a similar folder beneath the former B. The present invention resides 1 more in the manner of and means for asso- `eiating vand severing the Webs, than in the. .means for folding them after severing.
Theolding and cutting devices as shown in drawings comprise a large novel cutting cylinder 1J provided with diametrically opposite cuttingknives la; and a female cut 1ting and folding cylinder. 2 adapted to cojact with the cylinder l in severing' the web (or Webs) W fed thereto from former A.' 'Said cylinder 2 is provided with tucker .blades 2, and mechanism for operating'l them in the usual manner, so that said sucker blades will tuck thel severed sheets between the folding rolls 4, 4,'at the proper time and in the well understood manner."
llhe cylinder-2 is also providedvvith pins 2b, and their actuating mechanism, as usual; `said pins being adapted to carry the leading end of the web (or Webs), coming from former A from the point',uk of severance by the blades la to and beyond the rolls ll, to enable the blades 2a to properly tuck the severed sheets between said rolls 4., Atthe l'upper side of cylinder l, is an .auxiliary female cutting cylinder 3 which 1s adapted to sever the web (or Webs) w Jwhich is led thereto from the former B; said web '(or webs) w coming from the press to `and over loo , former B, then )ast the first. fold rolls Z), Z),
at the apex of ormer B, then to and over a guide 5, intermediate the foi-mers, and thence to and between cylinders 1 and 3; then it passes to and between the cylinders '1 and 2 where it is associated with the web (or webs) \V coming;` from former A, and is carried therewith by pins 2F in cylinder 2, to and over the folding rolls 4 between which, after scverance,'it is tucked, with the sheets severed from the web (o1 webs) W, by the blades 2a. The
which the end of the web (.orgroup of webs) w is carried from the polnt H over to the point G where it is associated with theweb (or group of webs) W. 1 n
It will be seen that if each press 1s printing and delivering 18 pages on the respective webs (or sets of webs) W and fw; thatl the 18 pages from webs 4W wduld be severed at the point G, when the cutting points of Y cylinders 1 and 2 contact; and the 18 pages from webs w would be severed at the point H, when the cutting .points of cylinders 1 and 3 come into contact. The webs `W and lw -are thus severed separately, instead of together, and obviously less work and `s train is put on the cutters than if 1t wasattem ted -to cut all together; whereas it would e a very diilicult matter to cut such a large yproduct at once b one set of knives as they could not propery penetrate such a great thickness of paper.
With the parts arranged as shown the webs 'w will be severed before webs W; that is, after'the leading ends of the webs W, fw, have both reached the point G, where the webs begin to assemble, the webs fw will be Severed at the point H about the time that the leading ends of the webs come opposite the rolls 4;-or when the centers of the sheets to be folded have reached the point G; .while the webs W are not severed until the leading ends of the webs have come about diametrically opposite the point G; or the tail ends of the sheets on webs W reach the point G; vand the cutters 1 operate upon webs W through the cut in the webs w' previously made by the action of the cutting clylinders 1 and 3. 'In this Way a large num er of webs can `be assembled, severed and the cut sheets delivered -folded together as one paper, without collecting on the cylinder 2; as I simply associate the products from one mess, to wit, web (or tract into the cylinder; and at this time the pins 2b in cylinder 2 catch the ends of both the webs W and w and lead them on around cylinder 2 untilwcb lV is severed, whereupon the tucker blade l delivers all the sheets to the folding rolls 4; in other words the pins 2 lead the webs W, w t0 a point where the sheets severed therefrom can be i folded properly between the rolls 4. It will be seen that when the machine is properly arranged instead of both 'groups ofiwebs, or 36 pages, having to be severed by one set of knives at the point G, only the web (or webs) W, or the product coming from the former A, has to be severed at G; while the web (or webs) w, or the product coming from former B, is severed at the point H;- this enables the knives to sever the webs accurately and easily, and greatly lessens the Wear and strain on the cutting apparatus. It moreover does away with the neces sity of collecting the sheets, thereby en hancing speed, and enables the papers from both webs (or oups of webs) to be associated and fol ed at one operation.
An additional web or webs, indicated at W in Fig. 1, mi ht be associated and folded with the webs V5, w, if desired, by leading such webs from a third rinting mechanism (not shown) to cylin er 2; a supplemental cutting cylinder 11, provided with a cutter blade 11, being arranged to co-act with cylinder 2 and sever the web (or webs) W before they reach the point of `association with webs W, 'w at G. The web (or webs) W in this case will be severed bythe cutters on cylinder 1 as before described, said cutters operating through the prior cut. in webs w, and at the point where web W has been already severed.
While it is not new, broadlyv speaking, to associate webs from one folder into another,
Ior to carry a web from different presses to one,or the same, folding mechanism, it is novel to sever the' associated webs at separate points; and the specific arrangement of cutting and folding cylinders shown in the drawings is also novel Aand very useful.
