Abstract

439,391. Manifolding sheets. HAND, L. T., 6924, Ridge Boulevard, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 4, 1934, No. 34815. [Class 16] [See also Group XVI] A stack of continuous, uninterrupted paper tape for use in recording machines is formed from a paper web by folding the web in zigzag fashion into equal coextensive folds, the edges of all of which are in alignment, the folds being delivered stacked and compacted by applied pressure to such a degree as to provide a substantially solid rectangular block having a hard edgewise surface on all four sides thereof. The web 8 passes from a roll 29, Fig. 2, over guide rollers to a roller 32 with which co-operates a circular cutter 33 which divides the web longitudinally into several strips, the severance being either complete or partial. The web then passes over further guide rollers, and, in the case of completely severed strips, the strips are separated somewhat by collars 53 on a shaft 36 and by longitudinally extending guides, before passing to indenting means 9 carried by rollers 6, 7, which are oppositely rotated and serve to indent the web so that it folds in zigzag upon a table 16. The table is slidable upon a guide 18 and its height is adjusted by rotating a worm 25 which turns a sprocket 23 over which passes one of a pair of chains 19, the other ends of which are attached to the table 16 and which also pass over sprockets 21 carried by a common shaft. The paper folds are compressed into a hard block on the table 16 by rotating helicoidal members 51, Fig. 3, which engage the two folded edges of the web and press each new fold down upon the pack. When the web is only partially severed, the tape widths can be detached after the complete block has been made. A plurality of webs including a carbon, wax, or other duplicating web may be formed into a block by passing the three webs in superimposed relation through the machine, the webs in this case being completely severed.
