Abstract

291,685. Wade, H., (Neher Akt.-Ges., R. V.). Nov. 26, 1927. Metal foil -Aluminium or other metal foils in web form and having at least one blank surface are joined togetber without interrupting the operation of the packing, printing or cutting machine in which they are (subsequently used, by overlapping the ends of the foils with their blank surfaces in contact and deforming by pressure the blank surfaces so that they interlock with each other. The parts 5, 6 may be passed between a pair of rolls 1, 3 having respectively a series of needle points 2 and recesses 4, which form perforations with raised edges. The rollers may be separated after joining so that the receding foil is not acted on during its passage to the machine. In a modification a roller with needle points may be traversed by hand over a bed of yielding material such as rubber, felt or fabric on which the foils have been placed. In a further form, Fig. 6, the foils 10<1>, 11<1> are placed on a bed 11 provided with a roughened surface 12, such as a file surface or a layer of emery or sand paper, and an annularly grooved roller 18 carried by a member 16 traversed thereover along an arm 14. The arm is pivoted at 13 so that the roller may be raised. The roller may be roughened and the bed smooth or both parts may be roughened. In joining foils which have one blank surface and one surface coated with paint &c. the foils 10', 11<1> are abutted with their blank surfaces in contact with the blank surface of a butt strap 12<1> and joined as previously described.
