Abstract

12,838. Pullen, E. June 21. Brakes.-Each vehicle of a train is fitted with an independent set of brake apparatus, and the brakes are normally held on by springs or weights and are released by a pull on the draw-bar, arrangements being provided for taking off the brakes when the vehicles are backed during shunting operations. The blocks l are linked to a tumbler i on a cross-shaft g, and, when the vehicle is at rest, are applied by the draw-spring e acting through an arm k. A pull on the draw-bar c releases the brakes by means of the arm k, while a pull on the draw-bar d takes them off through a wire, cord, or chain p, which is coiled around a drum j on the cross-shaft g. To release the brakes while shunting, there is provided a " backing-bar " which, in the case of vehicles having resilient buffers, is in two telescoping parts q, t, to each of which is connected a wire, cord, or chain s, secured to the drum j, whereby the brakes are released when the backing-bar is compressed. The bar t carries a piston x, working in an air cylinder w on the part q, and the ends of the backing-bar are forked and fitted with buffer plates. When the buffers are rigid, rigid sliding backing-bars are employed, their ends being normally flush with the buffers, and the engine is fitted with a bar which can be projected to come into contact with the backing- bar of the vehicle behind it and so take off the brakes throughout the train when the engine is backed. The shafts may slide in adjustable friction grips, consisting of split cones which can be screwed into sockets, so that the brakes of a detached vehicle can be held off for a certain interval, or until the vehicle comes into contact with another.
