Couplings of the singlepole type, for railway and other cars, which can be handled without danger, are made in two similar halves so arranged that the external contact-piece in each is not energized except when it is forced inwards on engaging the two halves by the ordinary bayonet joint. As shown in engagement in Fig. 1, the cable d passes into the housing b, and is connected to a plate e, insulated from a yoke g w h i c h forms the upper part of the housing and supports a diaphragm m carrying a contact-piece l fixed to two downwardly-extending arms n insulated from the part of the contact which carries the extension s. The plate e supports two plates f, and slots f<1> in these plates receive the ends of a pin h carried by the extension s; two arms i, connected by a spring j as shown in Fig. 3 and 4, are pivoted on the plate f and an insulated spring k, preferably so strong that a workman cannot compress it with his hands, holds the arms i from the contacts m as shown in Fig. 4. On engaging the members of the coupling, the diaphragm is forced into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the arms i are thereby brought into contact with the arms n so as to connect the two cable ends.
