9403. Smith, W. S. H. May 4. Hubs.-Relates to pneumatic hubs for the wheels of cycles and other vehicles, the object being to avoid cutting the pneumatic tube. The axle-box a, or the rotating axle, carries a fixed flange b, to which is attached a C-section ring formed with an outer annular flange. A similar plate e fits loosely on the axle, and both are connected by bolts and distance-tubes k passing through the nave g, which consists of a number of square tubes with open ends connected together by five-sided pyramidal boxes receiving the ends of the spokes h. The nave can move freely up and down between the surfaces of the plates c, e and rests upon the centre part of the wider pneumatic tube f, a band l of leather being interposed. Lugs m are provided on the nave, and if necessary on the tube f, engaging with the leather band, to prevent relative motion of the latter.
