Abstract

4297. Bowron, W. M. March 1. Driving-gear.-In order that the working stroke of a single-acting engine, pump, or the like, such as an internal-combustion engine, may be effected at a slower speed than the exhaust stroke, the connecting-rod is pivoted to a piece C, Fig; 1, which slides from side to side along a pin B as the piston reciprocates. This motion is produced by a bellcrank or other lever D, pivoted at one end to the slider C, and at the other end to the engine framing. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement as modified for a steam-engine. The connecting-rod end 4 reciprocates in the slotted end 3 of the piston-rod, and a link replaces the bell crank lever. The desired effect may be produced in other ways, such as by movement being imparted to the cylinder or the crank-shaft.
