Abstract
3808. Wootton, S. C., and Wootton, A. H. Feb. 23. Stamping.- Dies are used for making cardboard and like boxes or lids or parts of the boxes from blanks. The cardboard blank is placed in the mould 14, Fig. 2, and by the depression of the upper die 5 is forced into the lower die 13, the rounded edges 13<a> preventing tearing. A continued movement presses the die 13 into the recess 11 against the action of the spring 12, the top plunger spring 6, Fig. 1, not being compressed owing to its greater strength. Further movement of the die stock 1 compresses the spring 6, and the steel ring 9 enters the recess 11 and acts on the top edges 16 of the cardboard box, compressing them and making the walls of the required depth. The ring 9 is curved as at 19 to bevel the inside edges of the box, and it may be provided with projections to form recesses for the reception of the hinge and the catch of the box. On the return of the die stock, the spring 12 raises the box, which then frees itself from the top plunger.
