Abstract

104,837. Cheney, C. W. Oct. 6, 1916. Cupping.-In the manufacture of a cardboard lid or body of a jewel or similar case by a die and punch tool or male die operating in a press, a blank thicker than the thickness of the finished article is drawn down and shaped by means of a solid recessed or sunk die and a solid punch or male die. The article is formed by one descent of the punch f, and by using a die having a ledge such as d<5>, the face edge of the lid or body is formed or brought up square. The die A may be in two solid metal parts a, c rigidly connected, and is formed with a combined drawing and shaping sinking d, which is provided at d<5> with a sharp but small right-angled ledge to form a corresponding ledge on the body or lid c. The solid punch f is shaped at its lower end with square shoulders f<5>, so that when the punch descends upon the blank shown dotted at x, it compresses it, shaping the sides e<2> and finishing the edge of the rim. The process is carried out with heat in the die and preferably while the cardboard is damp.
