Abstract

27,875. Clayton, M. G. Nov. 30. Forging bolts and nuts; forging-dies.-Bolts and nuts are manufactured from scrap wads or punchings by side swaging to the required shape. In the case of nuts, the blanks are then pressed on the top and bottom surfaces, and pierced by conical punches. The side swaging- dies b, b are carried on slides operated by camactuated levers c, c; the upper pressing-die k is carried by a sliding frame i operated by a link-actuated toggle f through a spring j, which yields when the blank is pressed, and allows the conical punch e to enter the blank. The punch e then recedes, and the hole is completed by a cam-operated conical punch h. For bolts, the swaging-dies are shaped to form the shanks as well as the heads, and may be screw-threaded.
