Abstract
29,273. Haddan, H. J., [Le Gentil, E. R., Tachard, J., Alba, V., and Alba, L.]. Dec. 31. Purifying oils. - Oil used for the lubrication of steam engines and other machinery is separated from water and other impuritits by decantation. The impure liquid is pumped through a strainer b into a chamber by way of a perforated pipe d. The chamber is provided with transverse baffles f, e, and opens at the bottom into a pipe g which carries off the water, and at the top to a pipe i, which conducts oil and the lighter impurities to a second chamber. The liquid enters the centre one of the three compartments into which this chamber is divided through a perforated tube o extending vertically upwards. The heavier constituents pass into a side compartment under one of the partitions m, and the oil passes through an aperture r in the upper part of the partition n to the other compartment. Pipes x, q conduct, respectively, the oil and impurities away, the former to a lower chamber s, which may be provided with a perforated baffle t. The pipe x may be surrounded by a steam coil to keep the oil in a liquid state.
