Abstract
25,964. Henwood, E. N. Nov. 29. Spring wheels; tyres, non-elastic.-Relates to spring wheels with silent treads, for locomotives, traction engines, railway and tramway vehicles, and motor and other road vehicles, cycles, &c. ; Figs. 1 and 2 show a typical construction. Wood or other treads H are bolted between two flanged annular plates E, which are formed with a tongue and groove e', annular gripping-teeth e, and securing-webs e<1>. The flange of one plate may extend the whole width of the tread. The plates E are secured to a metal hub B by bolts D passing through india - rubber or like cushions C<1> in chambers formed and arranged as shown. An annular space F permits radial play of the parts. K, K<1> are mud guards. The tread H may be strengthened by steel rings J, and may consist of thin sections of steel or other tough metal and thicker sections of soft metal or wood, the sections being arranged radially, circumferentially, or otherwise. In a cycle wheel, the annular plates E have short inturned flanges which are riveted to the lateral extensions of the base of a channelled rim. The bolts D may be tubular. The cushions C' are either wholly confined within the hub or are placed in tubes, which are arranged in recesses in the hub or in the plates E, and are secured to one another and to an encircling band by welding, brazing, soldering, or riveting. The hub B is cast or forged in one piece with or without a driving- sleeve b, Fig. 2 ; or it may consist of annular plates riveted to the sides of a channelled boss, or, as shown in Fig. 17, of two webbed flanges A<2>, A<3> which lock together. In this form, the chambers enclosing the cushions C<1> fit in recesses in the annular plates E. Fig. 5 shows a wheel with an axle-box provided with a brake drum B<8> and an internally-toothed driving-ring B<7> ; these parts may be cast in one piece.
