Sifting and sorting refuse &c.- Refuse is sifted to separate large objects, such as tin cans, old boots, bottles, &c., before treatment by the usual 1 screening-- apparatus. The material is fed into a hopper A, which may be provided with a movable screen Z, and falls on to a sloping grid B, which may be vibrated and is provided with projections C for arresting the large objects. The material passing the grid B falls on to a sloping plate D, which delivers it to elevators, whence it passes to the usual screening-plant. The large objects are picked up by an elevator H, consisting of an endless band covered with spikes I, which pass between the bars of the grid, and are delivered on to a sorting-table J, where they are sorted by manual labour or otherwise. The various substances are delivered to a set of elevators L which distribute them to a corresponding set of shoots M, whence they may pass-to trucks for removal; or the elevators L may be dispensed with, and the material passed direct from the table J to the shoots. An air blast may blow over the table J to remove the paper and other light substances. A screen may be placed under the elevator H, which may be arranged at an adjustable angle, to convey small debris falling from the elevator to the plate D.
