Mills and apparatus.-Relates to apparatus for breaking and screening coal, coke, &c., of the kind comprising reciprocating pointed prongs for breaking the material, and a reciprocating graded screen for sorting the broken material. The material is fed from the trucks or ships by a conveyer a to one or more graded breakers A, A<1>, which break up the lumps progressively, and then passes by a fixed band f, or by a conveyer, to a screening-device B with superposed screens g, i, i<1> operated by an eccentric and rod j. The stamps d are secured to disks c operated by rods from crank-shafts b, and the coal is broken on endless travelling tables e formed of overlapping steel plates carried by chains. The broken coal is received on the screen g, and the large pieces may be returned by a conveyer h to the breaker, while the screenings fall on an inclined screen i formed of a series of perforated plates of increasing mesh. The different grades of coal are received in hoppers l, l<1>, l<2>, l<3>, l<4> discharging to conveyers m, m<1>, m<2>, m<3>, m<4>, which deliver to a second series of conveyers by means of which the coal is taken to the storing-places. Pieces too large to pass through the screen i fall into a hopper o and are led away by a conveyer p. The dust &c. separated by the lower screen i<1> are discharged by a conveyer q into a vat, whence they are removed by a bucket chain. The breakers, conveyers, &c. are driven by electric or other motors.
