18,612. Schr÷tter, E. F. A. F. von. Aug. 27. Hatches and hatchways.-The U-shaped hood supports, which divide the hatchway into smaller openings, are arranged so that their ends make water-tight joints with the hatch coamings and are capable of rapid removal. Fig. 3 shows in sectional plan one end of a support, while Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 1-1, Fig. 3. Each end of the hood support a has a fitting d with outer and inner flanges e, f. The outer flange is cut away and inserted in the hatch coaming recess and behind the stiffening-plate c. The joint is made tight by pressing the packing h in the U-shaped plate g against the plate c by means of screws i, l. The hoods (not shown) rest on packing-strips, and are bolted to the angle-iron m, and in some cases to the bottom of the hood support. To prevent damage to the edges and packings of the hatch coaming recesses during loading and unloading, a filling-plate o, Fig. 7, is inserted in each recess and secured by bolts r. A rail p on the plate o covers the upper edges of the plate c and the hatch coaming.
