Abstract

2350. Burrell, H. Jan. 31. Hatches and hatchways.-Covers for ships' hatchways and the like are formed of metal plates E strengthened on the outer surfaces by metal bars E' and by cross girders and bars E<3>, E<4>, They are hinged at D, D<1> to the hatchway coamings B so that they may open fore and aft or athwartships, and are . rendered water-tight by packing b<1>, Fig. 14, held between bars b at the upper part of the coaming. The covers, when closed, are secured by fastenings G, Fig. 12, formed of wedges sliding through sockets G' on one cover and bearing upon pieces G<2> fixed along the edge of the other cover, and by wedges I, Fig. 14, sliding through hinged slotted levers J<1> and bearing upon plates fixed around the covers. The smaller ends of the wedges are thickened so that they cannot leave the sockets. The fastenings are stated to be applicable to any door, cover, or lid. Ventilators F, which exclude water but allow the passage of air, are fitted. to the covers, and packing H is interposed between the overlapping parts. When the covers are open, the girders E<3> rest on the deck, the upper smooth surface serving as a working platform ; when opened into an inclined position they may serve as a coal or cargo shoot for loading &c.
