Abstract

15,787. Boult, A. J., [Soc. GÚnÚrale de Bonneterie, and Boucher, C.]. July 15. Straight-bar knitting-machines.-Relates to detail improvements of the Cotton's type of rib top machine, comprising a simple frame needle motion, a durable form of sinker and sinker bed, a slur-bar adjusted by pattern means to control the length of the loops, a comb for preventing entanglement of new and old machine loops, a thread -guide changing-apparatus and a fabric take-up. The frame needles move vertically in the welt-loop knocking-over comb 490, except while forming the welt. To enable them to place the old welt loops on the comb 490, a special horizontal movement is imparted. Fig. 4 shows suitable jack sinkers with extension pieces 29, nibs 24, and cutaway under portions 23<a>. The latter permit the use of a thicker and more durable sinker bed 21, Fig. 3, without interfering with the pressing- operations. The sinkers are operated by a slurcock and a dividing-bar 75 and their movement is limited by the bar 52. The latter and the slur-bar are moved together towards or away from the needles by a lever 50, 51, a link 53, and an arm 54. Loops for ordinary, slack, or welt courses, tuck stitches, or sinuous ribbed work can be obtained by pattern mechanism rocking the arm 54, which is traversed in the ordinary way by a second arm and a cam on the shaft 3. In the alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 7, dividing-sinkers are dispensed with, the jack sinkers being in two sets operated by two slur-cocks. The machine needles 380, Fig. 3<a>, are prevented from crossing by the solid part of a comb 41, pressed down by springs, while undercut portions, by receiving the old loops, prevent the new loops adhering thereto. The thread-guides 113, Fig. 3, are mounted in groups on rocking carriers 130 by which any thread-guide may be placed between the frame needles and the sinkers. The take-up drum is driven by a ratchet-and-pawl arrangement.
