Abstract

13,459. Imray, O., [Sturgeon, J. C.]. June 14. Impact wheels.- The steam or other fluid is directed on to radial blades J<1> on the stepped drum J by guideblades E, the inclination of which is changed to reverse the turbine by slotted rings G. The rings are worked by the mechanism H<1>, I, I<1> and engage pins e<1> on the outer ends of the guide -blades. The guide - blades may be plates, Fig. 3, or boxes, Fig. 5, and have ribs or webs e', e<3> to direct the fluid radially and are pivoted to plates D, D'. The blades J<1> increase in depth as the wheel increases in diameter ; the fluid leaves them laterally and passes outwards to the next chamber F. Each chamber F is connected to a chamber M' of equal diameter at the exhaust end of the wheel to neutralize the thrust.
