Chimney tops.- A metal strip is arranged in the form of a conical helix, in which the acute angle, made by the sides of the strip with the axis, increases, from bottom to top. The top may be made of cast iron, or from a circular sheet of wrought iron in which is made a saw cut along a line following an archimedian spiral, the centre of the circular sheet being then drawn out perpendicular to its plane. The Figure shows a chimney top made up of four helices and terminating in a cone.
