Vapour burners.-To make combustion more perfect and diminish noise, the flame of a vapour burner is made to take a whirling motion before it passes into contact with the surface to be heated. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement placed in the firebox of a steam-generator. The feeder delivers into the conical nozzle a, which opens tangentially into the circular track b ; this track may be made enlarging or narrowing from the entrance if desired, and in other cases may be of any suitable closed shape to follow the lines of the furnace. The outer wall of the track consists of segmental firebricks c, turned inwards at the top and bottom. The inner wall is an upright tube d, through which project the legs of a coil of piping h, which touches and helps to support the turnedover lip g. The coil is used for heating the feedwater, or superheating the steam. The bottom of the circular track is preferably covered with broken refractory material e. A perforated plate is provided below the central hole, with or without a jet pipe j for admitting air. Several burners or feeders may be used in some cases, and for small work the segmental bricks may be replaced by one ring.
