3163. Lord, R., and Collingbourne, T. H. Feb. 9. Hubs; spokes.-In wheels for motor cars, ordnance carriages, and other vehicles, the hub is made in two parts 1, 2, Fig. 5, which fit into each other and enclose the spokes in holes 7, an annular space being left to receive wedge-shaped heads 9, Fig. 3, of the spokes 8. The spokes are screwed internally and externally at the outer ends and secured to the rim by nipples 13 and a locking- screw 14. The two parts of the hub are secured together by one or more lock - nuts 6, Fig. 5, screwed on to the end of the part 1, which may have two threads of different pitch or of opposite hands. The abutting edges 4, 5 of the hub may be grooved and tenoned. For two sets of spokes, a central ring having semicircular holes is placed between the parts 1, 2 so as to form two sets of holes. The spokes are tubular, and are swaged or pressed to the desired section. In a modified way of securing the spokes to the rim, the nipples 13, Fig. 4, have external threads 15, on to which locknuts 16 are screwed against the inside of the rim.
