Abstract

[Cognate Application, 14,831/13.] Disk wheels ; spokes, securing.-Tubular spokes are formed by bending a blank a, Fig. 1, so that the part d and the parts e form the front and back respectively of the wedgeshaped butt ends, which, when welded or brazed together to form t h e wheel centre, the longitudinal joint being welded or brazed and placed at the back of the wheel. The central parts of the spokes may be strengthened by radial webs formed by parts o of the blank, or by feet at the ends i of the parts d, e, or by rings k, Fig. 7, or a tubular ring placed between the sides of the butt ends of the spokes. The outer ends of the spokes may be strengthened by one or more tongues 12 lapped round in the process of bending the blank. In a modification, inner ends of the spokes may be welded together and to a ring p, Fig. 8, of girder section, or to two rings with annular distance-pieces between, sufficient metal being left to allow a bore of any required size to be made. The outer ends of the spokes may be secured to a tyre-carrying rim, or an inner rim adapted to receive a tyre rim, in the manner described in Specification 24,866/11, or they may be fitted inside conical bosses 6, Fig. 14, with an internal ferrule 5, or outside the bosses with an external ferrule, or, as shown in Fig. 8, a flanged cylindrical ferrule 7 may be welded or otherwise attached to the rim and the outside of the spoke in combination with an internal ferrule 8, or vice versa, all the parts being welded or brazed together. The periphery of the wheel may be formed by. feet in the outer ends of the spokes welded or otherwise connected together.
