Abstract

25,853. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. Nov. 26. Insulating - compositions for electric conductors, suitable also for protecting electrical apparatus from heat, making insulating-supports, panels of switches, arc chutes of controllers, and other purposes, consist of soapstone, clay, or other refractory adulterant, and cryolite, finely ground, mixed together in a moist condition, and pressed in moulds. The articles are removed, dried, and fired at a temperature between 900‹ C. and 1100‹ C., preferably 950‹ C., which is high enough to fuse the cryolite slightly and thereby bind the mass together, but not high enough to change or harden the soapstone. Cryolite is the preferable flux, but others, such as sodium carbonate or fluor-spar, may be used, providing their melting-points are low enough. The proportions of the ingredients may be varied. The product is stated to drill or machine readily, and to resist heat and moisture.
