Abstract
25,640. Richards, J. Nov. 24. Centrifugal pumps.-Consists in encircling the impellers 12 of centrifugal pumps with an opensided continuous channel 15, the cross-sectional area of which increases, as indicated. The covers 4, 5 are made in one with the inlet pipes 7, 8, and are easily removable, permitting the surface of the channel 15 to be cleaned and inspected. The water in this channel moves at the same velocity as the impeller, and, after one revolution, is discharged into the gradually-diverging outlet 20, whereby the velocity of the discharge is decreased sufficiently to produce a pressure equal to the head against which the pump is working. Illustrative diagrams of the changes in velocity of the water during its passage through the pump are given in the Specification, and a modification is described in which the outlet is used as a support for the pump instead of the inlets, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
