Abstract

22,988. Lindmark, T. G. E. Oct. 23. Steam &c. turbines. - Consists in means for balancing axial thrust in compound or multipleexpansion elastic-fluid turbines. A turbine having three outward-flow wheels 6, mounted on a common shaft 36 and arranged in chambers 14 with axial inlets 2, has an inlet pipe 9 connected to the highpressure chamber, and an exhaust pipe 15 leading from the low-pressure chamber. The outside walls 16 and inside walls 12 of the casing form tight joints with the hub portions 7, 22, 30, and chambers 24 formed in the walls are connected by steam passages so that they have a common pressure which exerts an axial thrust on the projecting hub portion 5 and the cut-away portion 31. This arrangement balances the axial thrust due to the increasing size of the wheels, and inlet openings. In a modification, the common-pressure chamber is extended down to the shaft at each end of the turbine. Another modification has commonpressure chambers with tight joints formed between annular ribs on the wheels and internal walls in the casing. Another modification is adapted for a compound turbine.
