Abstract

20,509. Tunstall, C. Sept. 24. Brakes.-Relates to means for transmitting motion from an operating - lever pivoted on the handle-bars to a back-wheel rim brake. As applied to a bicycle, a lever a, through a cable b, rod c, bell-crank lever f, rod i, banging lever j and rod m<1>, pulls up the brake to the wheel. The lever a, pivoted between a pair of ears, has an arm extending into the handle-bar, where it is connected to a cable b. This cable passes out from the bar through an aperture fitted with a plate carrying a channelled elbow-piece in which the cable lies, the cable then passing down through a hole in the plate. The coupling d consists of a sleeve swivelled to the end of the cable, and screwed on to the upper member of the telescoping rod c. A clip g, by which the lever f is attached to the frame, is made from two semicircular halves connected by screws, and the section which carries the lever fulcrum has formed integral with it an arm bent forward to overlap the side of the section and form therewith a U-shaped piece g<3> affording a rigid bearing for the pin. The hanger j is pivoted to a two-part clip k<1>, one section of which has an arm n, inclining downwardly and rearwardly, and terminating in a bearing or sleeve n<1> for the bar m<1> of the brake. This end of the arm n serves as, or carries an abutment for, a takeoff spring o. The transmission mechanism may also be applied to brakes operated by levers connected by joints or like means to the adjusting- device attached to the rod c. The various parts such as the lever f, the sections of the clips, &c. can be made from flat blanks pressed or stamped from sheet steel. The Provisional Specification states that the guide for the flexible cord from the inside to the outside of the handle-bar, and the two-part adjusting and tensioning connection may be applied to front-wheel rim brakes, actuated in a similar manner.
