The lower end of the rod r is pivoted to one arm of a bent lever c fulcrumed at l to the frame a. The brake shoe b is suspended by two links d, d<1> centered at n and n<1>. Upon depressing the lever k, the arm c<1> of the lever comes into contact with the brake shoe and forces it forward until it comes into contact with the tyre of the cycle wheel, which is moving in the direction in which the brake shoe is advanced. A spring f serves to bring the brake out of action. The brake may be attached to the cycle frame by means of the clip e. A modification is described, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in which the brake rod is attached to an extension of the link d.
