Abstract

20,889. Hines, J. Sept. 25. Brakes. - Mechanism for applying brakes on cycles and like vehicles is arranged so that a hand or thumb lever acts through a resilient medium when only a light pressure is applied, but acts positively when a heavy pressure is applied. The lever is preferably connected to the brake by a stranded wire, and is made in two parts resiliently connected together. In one arrangement, shown in Fig. 1, a thumb-piece a is connected by a blade spring A' to a lever A fixed to a pin C, which is mounted in a clip bracket D fixed to the handle-bar and is fitted with suitable means for acting on the wire. The thumb-piece a when pressed hard, bears against the end of the lever A. The spring A' may be fixed to the other side of the lever and be connected to the thumb-piece a by a stem passing through a hole in the end of the lever A. Or the thumb-piece may act on the lever A through a helical spring A', Fig. 3, and be guided by a pin a' and sleeve a<2>. Or the thumb-piece may be formed on a lever A, Fig. 6, mounted loosely on the pin C and formed with a projection A<2>, which acts through a spring A<1> upon a short lever A<3> connected to the wire. A modification of this arrangement with the spring in tension or with a horse-shoe shaped spring may also be used. Instead of curving the lever A round the handle-bar and placing the pin C in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, the lever may be made straight and placed above the bar, the pin C being placed vertically. The eye d, Fig. 10, for the pin C may be connected to the clip D by a universally-adjustable connection G. If a hand-lever is employed, it may be made with a yielding joint A', Fig. 11, and be pivoted to a bracket H forming part of a clip D which also supports a guide-pulley E<1> for the wire or chain F<1> connected to the short arm of the lever. The motion of a hand-lever may be transmitted to a wire by means of a sliding bar F'. Fig. 13, formed with an inclined notch F<2>, which is engaged by the short arm of the lever A. If a rigid lever is employed, the wire may have a yielding coupling f Fig. 17.
