Abstract
20,208. Dring, J. Nov. 9. Tension members in guide-tubes.-Relates to mechanism for operating velocipede &c. brakes, valves, &c., in which a flexible tension member is used in conjunction with a flexible and incompressible guide, as described in Specification No. 25,325, A.D. 1896, and in Specifications No. 14,402, A.D. 1897, No. 1196, A.D. 1898, and No. 16,819, A.D 1899, [last three in Abridgment Class Velocipedes]. The operating-handle g, pivoted on a clip b, is formed with a disc or segment over which the tension member f is led to the point at which it is secured ; by this means excessive bending is prevented. The compression member d abuts against a shoulder formed in a nut e, which is screwed into the socket c of the clip ; or it may abut against a shoulder formed in the socket. The clip is formed with a ratchet segment, and the lever is provided with a spring pawl or trigger whereby it may be locked in any required position. Instead of supporting the handle &c. on a clip, a split socket c, expanded in the end of the handlebar or other tubular part by means of a taper screw may be used, as shown in Fig. 5.
