Abstract

6578. Hughes, J. March 21. Spring apparatus. - Consists of a machine for weighing heavy loads, such as castings and the like, the load being suspended from the machine which is slung from the chain of a crane or other lifting-apparatus. The load is attached to a swivelling shackle or loop g connected with a draw-rod e which carries a plate or block d slidably fitting in a chamber b upon one or more bowed steel plates or spring washers c ; or the block may y carry arms d<1> provided with rollers d<2> to slide upon the side of the chamber. A disc or @ may be made fast to the lower extending end of the bar e and provided with two or more guide - pegs to fit and slide in corresponding holes in the underside of the block, in order to prevent the bar from twisting. The downward motion of the bar e under the load and against the elasticity of the curved plates c may be transferred by a link or any other connection to a swinging toothed quadrant which meshes with a pinion mounted in a lower chamber f closed by a dial plate, or a rack h on the rod may gear directly with a pinion i on the pointer spindle, thus indicating the amount of the load. The discs c may be arranged, as shown, in pairs with concave faces opposed, suitable flanges allowing them to fit into each other, or they may be arranged in a nest or series with concave or convex sides uppermost, as desired. When light loads are required to produce a deflection, the edges or other parts of the washers may be split or divided at points, and when a single washer is used, it may be disposed with the convex or concave side up, as desired. A shackle a<1> is bolted to the main block a, or any other fitting provided, for attaching the balance to a crane or other apparatus.
