Abstract
3421. Hendy, J., and Stobart, H. J. S. Feb. 13. Incandescent vapour lamps; lighthouse lamps.- Relates to a lamp for burning vaporized petroleum to heat an incandescent mantle, specially adapted for lighthouse service, but also applicable to other purposes. The petroleum is fed into a tube f considerably larger in bore than the supply tube, which is said to prevent deposits in the vaporizer, and from this into a vaporizer consisting of two horizontal tubes a, one behind the other, through which the vaporized petroleum passes in series, returning to a nozzle g. Above this nozzle is the aperture of the supply connection h, through which a mixture of air and vapour is supplied to the heating-chamber d, passing from thence partly by a tube l to a vaporizing-burner c, and partly through a conical nozzle j and wire gauze k to the mantle flame. A heatretaining guard n of non-conducting material is placed above the vaporizer, and the gases are superheated in the passages h, d, l, as these are enclosed in a casing b, from which the burnt gases from the vaporizer pass away by the openings m. On starting, a removable spirit lamp or other means may be used to heat the vaporizer. A valve at the bottom of tube f prevents pulsation of the light.
