Abstract

3116. Jacques, H.I. Feb. 10. Driving - mechanism motor cycles.- In an epicyclic twospeed gear for cycles and other vehicles, particularly for use with motor cycles, the hub carries, on a flange C, pinions F, which engage with internal teeth on the driving- wheel I and with a spur-wheel G made in two parts, the outer of which has teeth and is free to move round the inner portion in a forward direction, but is prevented by teeth H from moving backwards. The driving-wheel has a boss M running upon a sleeve N, which, through a lever P actuated by a wire or rod, is moved npon the stationary spindle B and puts the clutch K, D in and out of gear. When the two parts are clutched together, the wheel I and the hub rotate as a whole, but, when the parts of the clutch are disengaged, the wheels F are turned and tend to rotate the wheel G backwards, with the result that the wheels F carrying the hub with them, are moved forward. The driving-wheel may be in two parts connected by springs, which absorb shocks caused by the explosions of the engine. The Provisional Specification states that the central pinion may be made the driver and the internal spur - wheel the fulcrum, in which case the driver runs in a bearing on the outside of the hub, and the parts of the clutch are preferably kept in contact by a spring and separated by movable feathers. A positive, or friction and positive, clutch may be used.
