Abstract

2510. Edwards Air Pump Syndicate, and Thompson, T. Feb. 2. Air pumps; pistons.-Relates to valveless air pumps of the kind described in Specification No. 5175, A.D. 1894. The conical end of the piston or bucket c, Fig. 1, forces the water &c. through the ports e, and, as the piston rises, the water &c. is forced through a valve h, the seating of which projects downwards in order to force the water from the cupped upper surface of the piston. The cupped upper surface of the piston may communicate by means of peripheral passages k, Fig. 2, with liquid sealing channels i, which may be connected by vertical passages l. The passages k are enlarged outwards to prevent clogging. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, liquid collects in the recess formed by the bevelled edge of the piston, and so passes to the circumferential grooves i. The piston may be packed by means of an ordinary split ring. Twin or single air pumps may be used, and two air pumps may be worked by one motor cylinder, or by two motor cylinders. The pumps may be driven directly or through levers or otherwise. The pressure on the two sides of the pump piston may be equalized by means of a bye-pass non-return valve to facilitate starting.
