Abstract
602. Walther, R. E. Jan. 9. Vapour lamps and burners.-Relates to lamps burning the vapour of liquid hydrocarbons, in which the heat of the flame is conducted by a metal post through two superposed chambers, to vaporize the liquid in the lower and dry it iu the upper chamber. The tube a, from the liquid reservoir, is filled up to the enlarged part e with a capillary material b, such as layers of lamp wick, which supplies liquid to the chamber c, and prevents any back rush of gas to the vessel. The heating-post h passes through the chambers c, d, but does not rest on the material b, its lower end being surrounded by a filling i of absorbent material held in two cylinders or cones k of wire gauze &c. The gas formed in the chamber c passes into the drying-chamber d through openings e, f, of which the latter may be closed by a screw valve g. The gas then enters the mixing-tube, drawing in with it the requisite quantity of air for combustion. The filling i, k, when worn out, is easily replaced by unscrewing the part d. To start the lamp, the wicks l are lighted, and, when gasification commences, the gas is lighted.
