SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,672, dated February 20, 1900. Application le July 31, 1899. Serial No. 725,560. (No model.)
To alt whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, AMOS F. MOREY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a certain new and improved burner adapted to burn gasolene or a similar light oil, said burner being so constructed as to generate therefrom a suiiicient quantity of gas to produce a iiame of great heat and when properly applied of great illuminating power.
The principal object of the invention is to produce a burner having great generating power and at the same time cheap to manufacture and easy to clean and keep in order.
To such end the invention consists in certain novel characteristics which will be described in connection with the preferred construction in which I have embodied them and will be definitely pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the drawings by means of five iigures, of which- Figure l is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a central transverse section in line 2 2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3, a similar section taken in a plane at' right angles to that of Fig. 2; Fig. et, a horizontal section looking downward upon the plane 4: 4t of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 a detail elevation of an inner part of the burner containing certain generating channels or passages.
A is a tubular casing or jacket, into which are screw-threaded a supply-pipe B, a lighting-pipe C, and a needle-valve stem D. The opening ci, with which the pipe B connects, eX- tends into the interior of the jacket, and the opening a', in which 'the needle-valve stem is screw-threaded, is coned at its inner end and also connects by means of a contracted opening with said interior. A downwardlyextending opening or passage a2 leads from the passage o. and has screw-threaded in it-s lower portion a pipe E, terminating in a noz- 'zie e, adapted to direct the gas upward within the burner and provided with an ordinary cleaning-screw e'. vThe internal bore of the jacket or casing is tapered and a correspondingly-tapered plug F is fitted within it containinga central bore f and an external groove f', doubling back and forth upon itself and leading from the inlet-port a to the needlevalve port a' The pipe E is preferably screwthreaded partly in the jacket and partly in] the plug, so as to hold the latter in place after it has been driven home. The top of the plug is covered by means of a perforated dome G, above which the gas burns, and an incandescing mantle I-I is suspended over-the dame in the manner of the ordinary gas or vapor burners of this sort to produceV the required light from the heat of the non-luminous flame. The gas anda sufiicient quantity of air are mingled together within the interior bore of the plug, so as to effect a complete and condensed combustion above the dome G. An inverted-dome-shaped shield I is secured to the bottom of the casing, covering the nozzle e and giving to theburner an ornamental and pleasingappearance. A preferably central opening in the bottom of said dome-shaped cover allows a sufficient quantity of air to pass through to support the combustion. The lighting-pipe C is preferably screwthreaded into an opening a3, which after it enters the side of the casing is directed downward and discharges the lighting duid upon a porous lining J, preferably asbestos felt, upon the inside of the cover or cup I. The lighting-pipe C is intended to be connected with a suitable supply of a proper lighting Huid-as, for instance, alcoholwhich may be admitted to the asbestos lining J by means of a valve c.
When the burner is not in operation, the needle-valve is closed, cutting off the passage of the gasolene to the nozzle e. To light the burner, a small quantity of alcohol is admitted, sufiicient to saturate the asbestos lining of the cup, and the same is lighted and burned to raise the temperature of the burner to the proper point to generate gas from the gasolene or other liquid employed. This liquid lies within the tortuous passage f formed by the external channel or groove in the plug and the adjacent walls of the jacket. As
soon as the alcohol burns out the needlevalve is opened, permitting the gas to pass out of the nozzlemingle with the air, rise through the dome G, and fill the interior of the man- IOO tle I-I. It is then lighted in the manner of the ordinary burner of this class and heats the mantle to the point of incandeseence.
IVhile the specific construction here described is thought by me to be preferable at this time, yet I recognize the possibility of almost unlimited variation in forni, arrangement, and construction, and therefore desire not to limit myself to the exact devices orarrangeinent or combinations thereof herein shown and described as far as the main features of the invention are concerned.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a generating-burner, the combination with a tubular jacket or casing, of a tubular plug Iitted thereto, the meeting surfaces forming between them a generating-passage, and a holding device screw-threaded on one of said parts and bearing upon the other to hold the plug tightly Within the casing, substantially as described.
2. In a generating-burner, the combination with a tubular jacket, of a tubular plug fitted within the same, said plug being provided upon its exterior surface with a series of channels united alternately at top and bottom making in combination with the contiguous Wall of the jacket, a continuous tortuous channel between the plug and the jacket, substantially as described.
3. A Vapor-generating burner, consisting of a tubular jacket or casing, a tubular plug fitted thereto, the meeting surfaces forming between them a generating-passage, a device for holding the plug tightly within the jacket or casing, a fluid-pipe connecting a part of said generating-passage with a supply, a descending vapor-pipe leading from another part of said passage, a valve controlling said descending Vapor-pipe, and a second valve controlling the flow of Vapor to the interior of said tubular plug, substantially as described.
