Abstract

518. Davidson, S. C. Jan. 8. Turbines.-Consists in mounting a pedestal upon the exterior surfaces of steam or water-driven turbines for carrying the bearings of a back-gear shaft, which is parallel with, and driven from, the motor shaft by gear-wheels or sprocket-wheels and chain, whereby the backgear shaft can be rotated at any required relative speed to that of the motor shaft. As applied to Pelton water - wheel, Fig. 10, the pedestal d, carrying arms e for supporting the back-gear shaft bearings f at a greater distance apart than the terminal ends of the motor bearings, is bolted to the motor casing, a vertical flange s being formed on the pedestal for this purpose. The motor casing may or may not be specially shaped for the purpose, or provided with feet to engage corresponding feet on the pedestal. The bearings f may or may not form an integral part of the pedestal, as desired. The gearing j, k which connects the shafts g, h, may be enclosed in a casing n carried by an annular ring o attached to the pedestal. On account of the arrangement of the arms e, the article to be driven, whether a fan, pulley, &c., which is attached to the back-gear shaft at g, rotates in a plane clear of the motor a. Instead of being mounted at one end of the shaft, as shown, the driving-gear may be applied between the driven article and the nearest bearing thereto on the gear pedestal,
