Abstract

27,387. Rateau, A. C. E. May 20, [date applied for under Patents Act, A. D. 1901]. Governing or controlling pumps; regulating discharge.-Consists of a centrifugal pump directly driven by a steam turbine, and adapted for a highdelivery pressure, as in mining work. The main pump 8 is supplied by an auxiliary pump 13, the delivery 11 of which is connected to the suction chamber 9 of the pump 8. A third pump 23, also on the turbine shaft, takes water from the suction chamber of the pump 13 and delivers it to an ejector-condenser, which takes the exhaust from the turbine. The pump 13 has an inlet at each side. The supply of steam to the turbine is controlled by a valve 36, Fig. 3, connected to a diaphragm 34, the position of which depends either on the speed of the pump or on its delivery. In the first case, the upper surface of the diaphragm is exposed to the pressure of air supplied by a fan on the turbine shaft, and, in the second case, to the pressure in the delivery main, the pipe connected to the space above the diaphragm terminating in the delivery main in an open-ended bend directed up-stream.
