Floors and flooring; girders and beams.-Relates to fire and sound proof floors carried on iron or steel girders a, Figs. 1 and 3, which support concrete slabs or arches b carrying the floor joists c. The joists c are moulded from a mixture of cokebreeze,sawdust, and lime or cement, and are of rectangular or trapezoidal section. They may be made continuous with channels g, or in sections as shown in Fig. 3, the channels being formed by the moulded ends of the sections c ; or, as indicated in Fig. 1, alternate sections have the channel formed in them. The ends of the lengths of joist may be made to lock into one another, or so as to be nailed or otherwise fastened together, or alternate adjacent ends may be made rectangular as at k, Fig. 3. Metal bars or tubes h, Fig. 4, may be moulded in the sections. The joists c' may be moulded in one with the slabs b, or they may be laid on mastic d, Figs. 2 and 4, a key e being formed in the joists. Strips of felt &c. i are placed between the floor boards and the joists.
