Abstract

22,980. Koenen, M. Nov. 1. Arches; floors; ceilings.-Flat arches for floors, ceilings, &c. are constructed of concrete or masonry with iron bars a embedded in the lower parts to resist the tensile stresses. The bars may be hooked over the upper flanges of the girders c, or through holes in the upper flanges or webs of the girders, or they may be connected to the girders or walls by hooked tie-rods. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 12, the flat middle part p of the arch rests on haunches which are connected to the girder by tie-bars so as to form cantilevers. The sides of the flat part of the arch may be inclined so as to wedge between the inclined faces of the haunches as shown in Fig. 13. When two arches abut against each other, the tie-bars may be carried over the girders, or be connected together by bars built into the brickwork, or embedded in the concrete. In one arrangement, the tie-rods on opposite sides of a wall are secured to a zig-zag rod embedded in the wall.
