Abstract

23,937. Girdwood, H. M. Nov. 3. Paper pipes and tubes for spinning, doubling, and winding frames, &c. The object is to enable wet yarn to be spun direct on to pirns or wound wet from the spinning-bobbins on to pirns, or wound wet on to large spools or into cheeses or cones in such a manner that the yarn can be easily and quickly dried, and, when dry, will not become loose on its foundation and will wind off freely without waste. The invention consists in the use of perforated tubes of paper or other similar substances. The tubes may be of any suitable kind, but are preferably formed by bending a sheet of perforated paper cut to the desired shape so as to form a split tube, which is held in place on the spindle by caps, chucks, &c., or by tongues on one edge of the sheet engaging with slots in the other. Figs. 1 and 2 represent perforated paper tubes which may be used, respectively, in a wet spinning- frame and for winding pirns in a winding-frame. Fig. 3 represents a piece of perforated cardboard which may be bent round a conical bobbin j, Fig. 4, and held in position by a cap l and flange k. A sheet of perforated paper may be wound round a cylindrical bobbin and held in place by caps or flanges similar to k, or it may be provided with tongues q and slots r for securing it in place on the bobbins s, Fig. 8. This method of securing the tube is applicable to plain or perforated tubes for wet or dry yarn. Pirns or cops wound on perforated tubes as described may be placed direct on to shuttle tongues and held thereon by a pair of spring jaws.
