Bobbins ; spools. -Yarn or the like intended for transport is wound on a light paper bobbin B, Fig. 1, supported on a wooden or metal bobbin A, having a removable flange A'. T h e paper bobbin has flexible circular flanges B', of thin strawboard or the like. In making it, radial cuts, of a length equal to the radius of the barrel, are made in the centre of the flange, the V-shaped portions B' produced by the cuts being turned inwards and pasted to the inside of the paper barrel B ; a plug is inserted in the barrel to hold the flange in position until the paste is dry. The filled paper bobbin is removed from the supporting-bobbin, and strips of paper C, Fig. 3, are pasted to tho flanges, connecting them together and securing the yarn in place. The flanges of the supporting- bobbin may be dished, in which case a more selfsupporting bobbin of yarn is obtained and the strips C may be dispensed with. The invention may be applied to spools for carrying thread. For unwinding, the paper bobbins may be placed directly in the creel, or may be superimposed on ordinary bobbins having one or both flanges detachable ; or a bobbin in two parts, each consisting of a flange and a tapered spindle which is wedged into the hollow paper bobbin, may be used.
