Description
A. w. KEIGHT YARN. SUPPORT Filed Aug. 1, 1945 Oct. 12,1948.
'INVENTOR. I ALBERT w. KEIGHT.
5 Y E N R O T T A Patented Oct. 12, 1948' YARN SUPPORT Albert w. Keight, Cumberland, Md., asslgnor to Celanese Corporation of America, a corporation of Delaware Application August 1, 1945, Serial No. 608,139
This invention relates to yarn package supports and relates more particularly to yarn package supports adapted to receive a magazine wrap or transfer tail.
A magazine wrap or transfer tail, as commonly understood in the art, is a portion of the inner end of the first yarn'wound on the yarn support and sodisposed as to be positively secured during thewinding of the remainder of the yarn package yet readily available for tying directly to the outer end of the yarn on another yarn package. The purpose of providing a magazine wrap or transfer tail on a yarn package is to enable an uninterrupted flow of yarn to be maintained from a depleted yarn package to full yarn package adjacent thereto, as in a creel or other yarn package holder upon which the yarn packages are supported.
In co-pending-U. S. application Ser. No. 583,- 222 filed March 17, 1945, now Patent No. 2,428,- 081, there is shown and described an improved apparatus for winding yarn on to ajarn support in such a manner that a secure and readily available magazine wrap or transfer tail is provlded. The yarn support employed in connection with said apparatus comprises either a headless or single-flanged bobbin, the central portion upon which the yarn is wound consisting of a cylindrical barrel adapted to receive the spindle 'Ihe'm-agazine of the yam winding machine. wrap or transfer tail provided is applied at the base of said cylindrical barrel.
With the central portion comprising a straight-sided; cylindrically shaped barrel and the yarn being applied with a cover wind, the
yarn package produced tends at times to. cause too much tension on the yarn during unwinding as in warping operations. The variation in the diameter of the yarn windings on the yarn package support where both ends of the yarn package are conically shaped, necessitates unwinding two rel section w-herebyyarn windings placed thereon may be removed without any substantial variation in tension on the yarn withdrawn.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a novel yarn package support which is strong, sturdy and relatively inexpensive to form.
2 Claims. (Cl. 242-118) Other objects of this invention, together with certain details of construction and arrangements of parts, will appear from the following detailed description and drawing.
In accordance with my invention I provide a yarn package support having a barrel together with means at one end thereof for receiving a magazine wrap or transfer tail, said barrel comprising a cylinder along a major portion of its a cone-shaped portion tapering outwardly toward the end of said support where the magazine wrap receiving means is situated.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure is a sectional view of the yarn package support of this invention, taken along the longitudinal axis thereof.
The yarn package support of my invention is generally indicated by reference numeral 24 and comprises a central cylindrical portion 25 tapering outwardly at the base to form a cone-shaped lower section 26. The top of yarn package support 24 is provided with a shaped knob 21 having a depression 28 at the top thereof for receiving an identification disc. The base of knob :21 extends laterally and is rolled to form a flange 28, the latter including the upper portion of the central cylinder 25 and a portion of the annular ring indicated by referencenumeral 30, so as to form a unitary structure. For added strength, yarn package support 24 is provided with a-hollow cylinder 3! which extends the full length of said yarn package support. The base of cylinder 3i which extends below the cone-shaped section 26 is rolled together with'a portion of the annular disc or spacing member 32 to form a flange or extension 33 the latter comprising the member upon which the magazine wrap or transfer tail is applied. The base ofthe cone-shaped section 26 is also rolled under and includes the peripheral portion of spacing member 32 to form a formity in the tension required to draw the yarn therefrom and to form the desired warp. Furthermore, the yarn package is extremely sturdy in construct-ion and relatively inexpensive to protection form. My novel construction provides ample for the magazine wrap or transfer tail applied thereto and makes it readily available for tying on to an adjacent package when formin: warps from the yarn wound thereon.
It is to be understood that the foregoing detailed description is given merely by way of illustration and that many variations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A yam package support having a barrel comprising a hollow tube cylindrioally shaped along the major portion ofits length and conically shaped alongthe remainder of its length, said conically shaped portion flaring outwardly towards one end of said lbarrel, a flange at the other end of said barrel, and a hollow tube within and spaced from the interior of said barrel and having a portion thereof extending beyond the oonically shaped portion of said barrel, said extending portion comprising means for receiving a magazine wrap or transfer tail.
2. A yarn package support having a barrel comprising a hollow tube cylindrically shaped along the major portion of its length and comeally shaped along the remainder of its length, said conically shaped portion flaring outwardly towards one end of said barrel. a flange at the other end of said barrel, and a hollow tube of substantially smaller diameter than the smallest diameter of said barrel passing through the center of said barrel and having a portion thereof extending beyond the conically shaped portion of said barrel, said extending portion comprising means for receiving a magazine wrap or transfer tail.
