Abstract
23,643. Parfitt, G. J. T. J. Oct. 29. Heckling-machines ; fibres,polishing.-Fibres are combed and polished by apparatus constructed with endless travelling belts 13, which grip the fibres projecting over the edge of the feeding- table 26 and present them to the action of two or more endless travelling bands 5 of brushes, or steel or other polishing-material. The fibres are thus subjected simultaneously to a crosswise and endwise action. The bands 5 pass round rollers 4, and a roller of one band is driven directly by a belt and drives a roller of the other band by grooved friction pulleys. Pulleys 6 carried by adjustable arms keep the bands taut. The belts 13, which travel approximately at right-angles to the bands, pass round pulleys 12, and may be formed of wires, two wires being employed on the upper pulleys and three wires on the lower pulleys. The adjacent portions of the belts 13 travel between spring-controlled guides 24, which are carried by brackets 25, and cause the belts to take a yielding grip of the fibres. Pulleys similar to the pulleys 6 keep the bands taut, and one of the pulleys 12 is driven by spur gearing 16, 15, and worm gearing 19, 18, from a belt pulley. One band 5 may be replaced by a roller or drum, and the belts 13 by a wheel or other device fitted with automatic grips for holding the fibres during polishing.
