23,240. James, C., and Hornsby, J. W. Oct. 24. Traction engines and road locomotives.-Relates to four-speed gears arranged without widening the side frames of traction engines and road locomotives driven by steam, gas, or oil engines. The countershaft a, driven from the crank shaft C by the clutch c and the spur gearing shown, has two pinions d, e formed on the fixed boss d<1> and two pinions f, g which may be moved sideways by the clutch-pins g<1> and clutch-collar i respectively. A second shaft j geared to the road wheels has correspondingly-arranged wheels k, l, m, n gearing with the pinions d, e, f, g respectively. The rims of the pinions d, e and wheels n, m overhang their bosses laterally, and the arrangement is such that the pinion g and wheel k when out of gear are housed within recesses in the pinion d and wheel n so that the width occupied by the four-speed pinions and four-speed wheels is equal to the width of six sets of teeth instead of eight sets, as usual.
