Abstract

22,709. Todd, L. M. Oct. 18. Printing on cheques &c. ; type-writers.-Relates to devices for embossing or printing upon cheques, drafts, &c. a limiting amount in words, beyond which the cheque &c. is not good. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the printing-apparatus with a portion of the casing broken away, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section. The frame comprises a casing 1 for the printing-wheels &c., and a base 73 secured to the casing 1 by bolts 74 and nuts 75. A closing- plate 2, covered with cloth, fits into the base, and is held by spring fingers 78. The heads of the bolts 74 limit the inward movement of the closing- plate. A slot 3 is cut in the casing 1 for the reception of the cheque &c. to be printed on. Journalled in the casing 1 is a shaft 4 to which is secured the left-hand printing-wheel 5, Fig. 7. The other printing wheel 7 is loose on the shaft, and carries an index dial 11. The printing-wheels consist of stereotype sheets bearing printing- characters, and as the wheels are relatively movable a large number of limiting-values can be printed by combining the formes on the two wheels. Such endorsements as "Not over nineteen hundred " forty" can thus be printed. Adjustment of the type-wheels relatively to one another is effected by drawing the dial 15 slightly towards the right by virtue of its sliding but non-rotative relation to the shaft 4, and then re-engaging a pin carried by it with a fresh hole in the dial 11, the dials being thus locked together in a fresh combination. A stationary index 13 indicates which formes are at the printing position. An inking-roller 70 bears against each printing-wheel, and acts as a centering or aligning device for it. The shaft 28 which carries the inking-rollers is spring-tensioned towards the type-wheels. At intervals the operator depresses plungers 86, so as to bring a hollow feltcovering 83, charged with ink, against the rollers 70. The platen consists of a strip 33 of rubber, leather, or other yielding material secured to a block 32 carried by pivoted arms 34. The platen is lifted against the type-wheels by a lever 40 pivoted on a shaft 41 and bearing a contact-face 44, which may be an embedded steel ball. The block 32 bears a similar contact-face 42. Links 47 pivoted at 48 to the lever 40 are slotted to engage pins 51 carried by the extension 52 of the hand-lever 45, which thus exerts a toggle-like action on the lever 40. The extent to which embossing takes place can be regulated by turning the shaft 41, which is eccentric with respect to its bearings in the casing 1. Locking-devices are provided for holding the shaft in the adjusted position. A guard-plate 68 prevents the paper from receiving an impression from more than one forme.
